
Free standing statue over subterranean vault comprising figurative group hewn from a single block of Carrara marble depicting four children clinging to a woman (thought to represent the four children of Peter Henrik & Janna Haagensen).
Cast-iron slabs over flight of marble steps giving access to vault, panelled in white Carrara marble and having a mosaic floor. Two inscription plaques to Peter Haagensen and his late wife with accompanying relief portraits, inscription plaques reading:
"Peter Henrik Haagensen, Born at Moss Norway, 3 Aug. 1837, Died 12 May, 1919. Peter Haagensen was Consul for Sweden and Norway".
"Janna A E Haagensen, Born Hacerup at Vincer Norway 7 Sept. 1843, Died at Grimsby 11 Decb. 1897".

A native or Norway, Peter Henrik Haagensen moved to England in 1867, later serving as consul for Sweden and Norway. Residing in the seaside town of Grimsby (Spring Villa, Bargate), He worked as a ships broker and timber merchaant to the town.
The memorial was erected by Hendrick in 1897 as a final resting place for his wife, Janna. At the time, people are said to have travelled from the surrounding towns and villages to visit the monument where they could purchase a postcard or even a china replica!
Hendrick joined his wife in 1919. Also interred within are their four offspring; Henry, Clara, Frederick and Macia.
Frederick Haagensen (second son of Hendrick and Janna) was well known for his etchings with, Her Majestry Queen Mary among his many society patrons. A number of his works now form part of the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Good condition and well maintained c.2013.
