Aitchison Mausoleum
A large Portland stone mausoleum, in the Parisian manner, with an eared pediment and crucifix finial. The long inscription in lead letters on the eastern side of the monument gives details of General Aitchison’s military exploits.

History
General Sir John Aitchison KCB GCB (1789-1875) served as an ensign in the 3rd Foot Guards throughout the Peninsular War. He was present at the Passage of the Douro, and was wounded in the arm while carrying the King’s colour at Talavera; he also saw action at Busaco, Salamanca, Vittoria, San Sebastian, Nivelle, Nive and Bayonne and took part in the capture of Madrid and the Siege of Burgos. He later served in India, 1845-51, as Major General on the staff of the Madras Presidency.
Condition
Fair, though it suffered bomb damage in 1941 (2002).
